Donald Trump declared persona non grata in Panama

(AFP) PANAMA CITY — The municipal council of Panama City has declared US real estate tycoon Donald Trump persona non grata following remarks he allegedly made about the Panama Canal. "We unanimously approved a resolution that declared Donald Trump persona non grata," Javier Ortega, a member of the council, told AFP Friday. According to Panamanian officials, Trump told CNN that the United States had "stupidly" handed over the Panama Canal to the country "in exchange for nothing." The canal, linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, was handed over to Panama in 1999 under a 1977 treaty signed by former US president Jimmy Carter. "I think it was a political stupidity on the part of Donald Trump," said Panamanian Commerce and Industry Minister Roberto Henriquez. "Somebody who has 400 million dollars invested in Panama should not speak this way."

Editor's Comment: For the record - the vote in the US Senate in 1977 to ratify the agreement now known as the Torrijos-Carter Treaty was very close indeed - it almost didn't pass. The Carter administration had to conduct some serious horse trading, and in fact the outcome of the voting was in doubt up to the very end. Consider the following:

• 
  The Fight for Ratification - After the new canal treaties were signed, President Carter had to convince the U.S. Senate to ratify the agreements. To win support, he explained the treaties at town meeting and briefings, stating they were consistent with America’s interests and ideals.
  Anti-treaty groups countered the president’s message with a public relations campaign. Senate opponents accused him of giving away the Canal and tried to defeat the treaties by attaching unacceptable amendments.
  By February 1978, at the height of the Senate debate, President Carter needed eighteen more votes to win ratification. The memorandum on Presidential Telephone Calls to Senators reveals the close attention Carter devoted to senators whose votes he badly needed. He asked for their support on the basis of profound national interest . . . and prestige of the Presidency.
  President Carter’s treaty campaign received an unexpected boost in mid-October 1977 when actor John Wayne spoke out in favor of ratification. After the press called him a treaty foe, Wayne issued a pro-treaty statement which he sent to the president, each senator, and many private citizens. When the Senate ratified the Panama Canal treaties in March and April 1978, each by one-vote margins, President Carter’s long ordeal ended.

So, back in 1978 (the last time this discussion really mattered) the majority was achieved by just one vote. This article doesn't talk about all the "stuff" Carter had to give away in order to achieve the required vote total, and it was some significant stuff. I'm bringing this up because there are a whole lot of people running around who still agree with the "it was a stupid thing to do" sentiment. I'm not one of them, mostly because I've since seen the true impact of the Torrijos-Carter treaty on Panama and the Panamanian people. History will show how the transfer of the Panama Canal treaty from the US to Panama had virtually no (zero) negative impact on the US economy, but by allowing the Panamanians to manage the Panama Canal and the surrounding lands for their own benefit and best interests, the impact on the country of Panama and its people has been tremendously beneficial. I also strongly feel this "PNG" declaration by the municipal government of Panama City is one of the dumbest things I've ever seen any group of politicians do, ever. These are the same bunch of idiots who "got fired" because they couldn't even collect the damn garbage. They should all be recalled and/or spanked in the public square. In short, who gives a rat's ass what these idiots think? Not me, that's for sure.
