Betty Seatholo podría representar a Botswana en Miss World 2014

misbots_320_380.jpg

Ladies who have been dreaming about being crowned Miss Botswana 2014 may never see the day. Each year this time, organisers and the Botswana Council of Women (BCW) are forthcoming about information regarding scouting dates, boot camps, as well as the possible date of the crowning of the new queen.

That is not the case this year. It has now surfaced that the event management company tasked with putting together the pageant has pulled out after just a year, despite the three-year contract with BCW.

The company, Sweet Baint and Pleasant Worthy have confirmed that Miss Botswana is a cash cow that drained their coffers. Their confirmation pushes BCW who remain mum about what is happening with the pageant, into a tight corner. This also lessens the chances of the Council rescuing the situation in time to crown the new queen by April this year.

Failure by BCW to crown the new queen by April would mean that Miss Botswana elect, 1st Princess from last year, Betty Seatlholo would represent the country. In the unlikely event that Seatlholo is not be able to fulfil that responsibility, Khumo Leburu who was the 2nd Princess will have to fill in the shoes. BCW would be forced to work with either Seatlholo or Leburu, in preparation of the Miss World peagant.

They would also have to put together a project that she would present at the pageant. The rules of Miss World are that by April, all participating countries need to have crowned their queens. The decision was reached in order to allow contestants and local license holders enough time to prepare the queen for the international pageant. This year the pageant will be held in London, following the debacle in last year’s pageant in Indonesia.

Speaking in an interview, David Abram of Sweet Baint and Pleasant Worthy disclosed that they had informed BCW about their decision not to continue with their contract citing loss of money and l sponsors. He also said that lack of sponsorship had forced them to run the national pageant from their own pockets losing more than P250 000 in the process. “We had a three-year contract but in light of lack of sponsors and our loss last year, we have pulled out,” he said.
He also said that the money that they had lost could have been invested somewherelse within their company. Abraham further explained during a previous interview that putting together Miss Botswana required more than P1.5 million. The money goes to various aspects of the competition such as scouting and auditions, boot camp, fashion show as well as the finals.

When quizzed on whether they had not done their research before taking the role of the event management company, Abram said that they were given the reins in January last year.

“We could have started working on the pageant in 2012 but we could not do that because of the court case that BCW had with the previous organisers,” he explained.

He further said that they pulled out of the pageant when they realised that the national pageant did not attract sponsors particularly government as compared to other countries where sponsorship was abundant. Several attempts to solicit a comment from BCW have been futile.

• In 2000, Puna Serati, 1st Princess to Alima Isaacs (Miss Botswana 1999) became Miss Botswana elect.

• In 2012, a year that was riddled with a court battle between BCW and 63 Entertainment and Leap Frog forced BCW to save face and send Miss Botswana elect (Tapiwa Anna-Marie Preston) to Miss World. Preston was 1st Princess to Karabo Sampson (Miss Botswana 2011).

• Tshegofatso Robbie, 1st Princess to Juby Peacock (Miss Botswana 2004) donned the Miss Botswana elect crown at the Miss World pageant.
