@Miss Universe 2011 Leila Lopes Named Ambassador Of HIV Prevention For AID FOR AIDS International

NEW YORK (October 26, 2011) – AID FOR AIDS International (AFAI) is proud to announce that Leila Lopes, the newly crowned Miss Universe 2011, will serve as the Ambassador of HIV Prevention for the next year. This distinction was bestowed on Lopes during her visit to the AFAI New York office on October 21.

Ms. Lopes is an ardent supporter of children’s health and HIV prevention and treatment programs therefore AFAI was a natural fit. To prepare herself for the position, Lopes participated in an intensive training session in HIV prevention conducted by Lupe Aguais and Jaime Valencia, AFAI’s Director of Operations. Aguais is the creator of the “Cuanto Sabes de VIH y Sida?” HIV preventive education program, which reaches over 600,000 adolescents annually in Latin America and the Caribbean.

“Leila was an eager student, and we believe she’ll be a great spokesperson for the cause,” noted Ms. Aguais.

As the Ambassador for HIV Prevention, Leila will address young people, educators, as well as political and business leaders throughout the world regarding the need for effective HIV prevention.

The Miss Universe Organization has been a strong supporter of AFAI for the past two years. As part of AFAI’s HIV prevention tours in Latin America and the Caribbean, Miss Universe 2009, Stefania Fernandez, traveled with the organization’s team to Dominican Republic to promote AIDS awareness and Miss Universe 2010, Ximena Navarrete, spent her trips to Panama and Dominican Republic speaking to kids and youth about HIV prevention. Leila will follow their steps in advocating AFAI’s mission and will be an instrumental part of their global outreach.
