UN invites Leila Lopes Miss Universe 2011 to be ambassador for Arid Regions

New York – Miss Universe 2011, Angolan Leila Lopes, was invited by Mr. Luc Gnacadja the Executive Secretary of the UNCCD to be ambassador for Arid Regions of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification.

A press release from the United Nations addressed to Miss Universe congratulates her for conquering the title, stressing the fact of Leila Lopes having highlighted during her victory that she will dedicate herself in helping Angolan people on various matters. The document adds that Angola is one of the 110 countries affected by desertification, a process of losing productivity of land and fertility of soils which leads people to poverty and food security, with African continent being the most vulnerable to desertification and poverty.

Leila Lopes was born in Benguela, Angola. Lopes was a business management student in Great Britain, where she was crowned Miss Angola UK on October 8, 2010, as the official representative of the Angolan community in the United Kingdom to the Miss Angola 2011 event, which took place two months later in Luanda. During her term, Leila Lopes will live in New York, under the auspices of Miss Universe Committee.
