Windhoek — Luzaan van Wyk, 24, was crowned Miss Namibia 2011 on Saturday evening at a local hotel.

Van Wyk did enough during the gruelling elimination rounds to impress the seven judges to win the coveted title.

Last year's Miss Namibia, Odile Gertze, handed over the crown to the new winner at the glitzy event.

The seven judges were well-known businessman and former National Director of the Miss Namibia Pageant, Nic Kruger, the Managing Director of Oxygen Communications, Hilda Basson-Namundjebo, the Regional Head of Marketing of Standard Bank Namibia, Sanele Gumede, internationally-acclaimed photographer Amy Schoeman, the General Manager for Commercial Services at Air Namibia, Xavier Masule, Namibian Sportswoman of the Year 2010 and Olympian Gaby Ahrens and Nakara principal designer, Gustav Peters. The contestants were judged under three categories - swimsuit, evening gown and interview.

Nangula Itembu, 22, was crowned First Princess, with Georgina Kandjeke, 19, Second Princesss

Reliance Biwa, 22, was voted Miss Photogenic, while Veronica Ngarangombe, 20, was voted Miss Personality. Kandjeke was also the Public's Choice winner.

Biwa was a definite crowd favourite as she wooed the audience with her dazzling smile and explosive personality, but faltered in the question-and-answer session.

Besides Van Wyk, Kandjeke, Itembu and Biwa, Tses-born Maria Kharas also made it into the final five of this year's competition.

Surprisingly, 19-year old Charmaine Tjizumaue, who had the crowd in ruptures every time she hit the catwalk, did not make it into the final five.

Miss Namibia 2011 will participate in the Miss Universe 2011 pageant to be held in Sao Paulo, Brazil on September 12, and the Miss World 2011 pageant slated for November 8 in London, England.
