Trans Rights Advocate, Mexican Miss Universe Ends the Reign of the Bigoted Bimbo Beauty Queens

Reigning Miss Universe 2010, Ximena Navarrete from Guadalajara, Mexico, makes Carrie Prejean seem like… Carrie Prejean. Ximena recently visited Guatemala to meet with transgender women who had faced discrimination in the work place and public facilites.According to GLAAD, Ximena believes that all women should have legal protections and equal access to jobs and health care. And her trip was sponsored by PASMO, a non-profit that works to educate about safe sex and STD prevention.

This isn’t the only pin on Ximena’s sash when it comes to her support of the LGBT community, following in the high heels of ally Miss New York Claire Buffie whose pageant platform was gay rights.

Last year, shortly after being crowned Miss Universe, Ximena gave an interview to a Mexican radio station where she opened up about marriage equality, and she was not one to lag behind the gay equality movement happening in her home country’s capital. Blabbeando translated her comments:

The truth is that I am absolutely against discrimination and, well, what can I say. I have many friends who are homosexual and I adore them. And they are equal folk: There is no reason we should want to set them aside, there is no reason why we shouldn’t let them enjoy what they want to enjoy with their partner.
