Imelda Schweighart resigns as Miss Philippines Earth By Edwin P. Sallan, InterAksyon.com October 31, 2016 · 6:46 pm Imelda Schweighart's official profile photo at the Miss Earth website and with Miss Ecuador and eventual Miss Earth 2016 winner Katherine Espin during the candidates' press presentation (Photo from the Miss Earth Twitter page) Controversial beauty queen Imelda Schweighart has resigned as Miss Philippines Earth 2016. This was disclosed by Lorraine Schuck, executive vice president of Carousel Productions, the owner of the Miss Earth franchise and confirmed by Schweighart herself, during a telephone interview with CNN Philippines early Monday evening. Schuck told CNN anchor Pia Hontiveros that Schweighart’s mother had arrived all the way from New Zealand and convinced her daughter to give up her crown to spare her from all the bashing she had been subjected to as a result of a leaked video where she was caught making disparaging remarks against newly crowned Miss Earth 2016 Katherine Espin who represented Ecuador. Asked by Hontiveros how she came to the decision of giving up her Miss Philippines Earth crown, Schweighart stressed that it was her mother’s decision. As for her future plans after this, Schuck earlier said that Schweighart’s mother intends to take her back to New Zealand. Miss Philippines Earth first runner-up Kiara Giel Gregorio will take over the rest of Schweighart’s remaining obligations. Schweighart’s resignation came hours after she granted a phone interview also with CNN Philippines around noontime where she apologized and explained her side regarding the controversial video. In that video which was taken shortly after the coronation night last Saturday, Schweighart was seen telling her supporters that everything about Miss Ecuador — from her nose to her chin to her private parts — was “fake.” In the CNN interview with anchor Pinky Webb, Schweighart apologized for what she said but insisted that she was “telling the truth.” “She said it herself. She underwent surgery but how I said it, I was unmindful while saying it. If it’s a crime to tell the truth, I’m sorry. That’s what I have to say,” Schweighart told CNN anchor Pinky Webb during the interview. By unmindful, Schweighart meant that she said those things to her supporters not realizing that someone took a video and posted it online. “I was talking to my supporters thinking I could be comfortable with them because they went there to support me. They know what I have been through. The hurt I have been through in this pageant. And I thought they would understand…It was supposed to be private but they put it out in public,” she explained. That’s when Schweighart turned emotional and said that while she’s honestly not bitter, she was “offended.” “Why? Because the gown I was supposed to wear was given to Ecuador. I fitted the gown. I was in the heat of the moment that the gown that was placed in the Philippines’ cubicle was taken. That box. My gown. Fitted sa akin. Named after me. The effort I put to be able to wear that gown, even kahit awarding na lang, I wasn’t able to wear it,” she shared. Asked by Webb how her gown ended up with Espin, Schweighart said that “according to the designer, he didn’t finish the gown of Katherine.” “Binigay na lang niya yung gown ko. But it wasn’t explained to me at the time, it was just taken away from me. And Miss Guam made me borrow her gown because I had nothing to wear. Then after that, I was still in the heat of the moment, why did they do that to me?” At that point, Schweighart aired her other issues with the pageant which she believes contributed to her not making the semifinals. “Hindi na nga nila ako inaasikaso, yung bags ko, ako ang nagbibitbit lahat. Ako nagpapagod lahat. Ako [ang] binabash ng lahat and that made, not be able to make it. They judged me, [that] I have a bad attitude. Seriously, I wouldn’t be in this industry if I had a bad attitude because I wouldn’t endure the pain if I am what they say I am.” By the time she made those controversial remarks against Miss Ecuador, Schweighart admitted that she was still in “the heat of the moment.” “I didn’t mean to offend Miss Ecuador with her stint. I don’t know her well enough but she was my roommate and I’m sorry if I was able to say that. For my unmindful statement that was taken a video of and posted online. And people are feasting over me, judging me like they haven’t done anything wrong in their life.” Following the interview with Schweighart, Webb then got Lorraine Schuck on the phone and asked about Carousel Productions’ position on the post-pageant controversies involving Schweighart. “I’ve been trying to reach her since yesterday. Her phone was off. I even texted her this morning. And I’m still waiting for her call or she can text me,” Schuck said. “I’ve been hearing a lot but I have to confirm first as I don’t get to see everything.” Schuck declined to comment at the time if Schweighart would be subjected to possible sanctions for her actions as she stressed that they really need to talk first. “I hope she calls me today so we would know what’s going on. We need to iron out these sensitive issues out as they involve Miss Earth,” she added. Several netizens had called for Schweighart’s dethronement as Miss Philippines Earth in the fallout of the controversial video................................................................
