Expect tears, diva tantrums and tons of jewel-encrusted tiaras - the most glamorous show on earth is back!

This year's crop of Miss Universe hopefuls have descended on Las Vegas' Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino ahead of the glitzy competition on December 20.

Dolled up in sequin-adorned floor-length gowns, eye-wateringly high shoes and sashes proudly showcasing their country of origin, the 81 women posed for a photograph on the steps of the four-star hotel alongside last year's winner, Colombia's Paulina Vega.

Blowing kisses to the adoring crowds, Peru's Miss Spoya dazzled in a sparkling green dress with a daringly low-cut neckline, pictured left, while last year's winner Colombia's Paulina Vega, right, wows in a floor-length gold sequin gown

All eyes were on 22-year-old Miss Vega as she stepped out of a chauffeur-driven car in a floor-skimming gold sequin dress with spaghetti straps and an emerald-studded headpiece.

Miss Vega is only the second woman from Colombia to win the crown in the competition's 63 year history.

Moments after her historic win, people in her home country flooded the streets and danced in celebration. President Juan Manuel Santos also declared a national holiday in her honour.

The 5’ 9” dark-haired beauty, who is fluent in both English and Spanish, said after her win: 'My goal this year is to learn more about myself – I hope to become a better person, better professional and better Paulina.'

Eager to scoop the prize again is this year's entry for Colombia, 21-year-old Ariadna Gutierrez Aréval.

She was spotted flashing a peace sign at the waiting press and giving the cameras a thumbs up.

But she has stiff competition - not least in the form of Peru's 24-year-old Laura Spoya.

Blowing kisses to the adoring crowds, Miss Spoya dazzled in a sparkling green dress with a daringly low-cut neckline.

The Miss Universe Organisation is a company 'run by women for women' and is built on a foundation of inclusion. It continues to be a celebration of diversity.

Annually, nearly ten thousand young women participate in Miss Universe pageant events.

Hoping to cinch the glitzy head wear for Great Britain is Nena France.

The 25-year-old from London works as a full-time model and is described as a 'sweet, genuine young woman with a laid-back attitude'.

Having been brought up with parents from both Britain and Thailand, she 'understands differences in culture and traditions', according to her biography on the Miss Universe website.

She is a 'keen adventurer' and 'wants nothing more than to see the world and take herself out of her comfort zone'.

Talking about life in the UK, she said: 'British people drink the most tea in the world, and we drink it with milk. I have found that when I add milk to my breakfast tea, most of my non-British friends have found this extremely bizarre.'

The 2015 Miss Universe Pageant takes place on December 20.
