MUO still stands to celebrate the 2012 pageant at Dominican Republic

The plan to hold the Miss Universe Pageant this year in the Dominican Republic at the resort of Punta Cana still stands, despite the fact that the local Government refused to fund or make financial contributions for the contest, MUO organizers said on Wednesday.

"There has been an overwhelming support from the private sector, starting with the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana and the project goes live for Dominican Republic," said the Miss Universe Organization in an e-mail sent to The Associated Press through the Rubenstein Public Relations Agency.

The company confirmed that the Dominican Government, which assumed duties on last August, informed that the admistration have no capacity to finance the contest because "it is in the middle of an unexpected financial crisis".

José Ramón Peralta, administrative Minister of the Presidency, said Wednesday that the Miss Universe Organization requested the Government at least $ 6 million dollars to finance the contest, which he described as an important event for tourism promotion.

If the organizers of the contest "they want to do with their resources and the contributions of the private sector are welcome," said Peralta to reiterate that the Government has no ability to assume the costs.

Peralta received a delegation from the Miss Universe Organization headed by the Organization counselor Andrea Berner on 7 September to discuss the subject.

The official explained that on Monday night the will announced the final decision of the Government to MUO that performs the beauty pageant every year, but they unfamiliar if the organizers will opt for Punta Cana or other venue.

Magaly Febles, Director of Miss Universe, Dominican Republic, told The Associated Press in June that the organizers of the contest evaluated the possibility of convening in December in Punta Cana, on the eastern side of the country, and they only are waiting the response of the Dominican Government.

Peralta has insisted that the Government may not backing the costs of the event. "We are at a time next to a fiscal pact to an austerity plan and we must be very cautious in spending," he said.

The Dominican Government began meetings with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) this week to assess the economic situation in the country, after the change of management, with the goal of an eventual agreement of monitoring.

The Miss Universe Organization said they understand the reasons for the Dominican Government, but insisted that the beauty contest adapts to the plans of the Dominican President Danilo Medina give new impetus to the tourism sector in the country, which is the main recipient of tourists in the Caribbean with four million visitors a year.

Medina plans include increasing to ten million visitors on the next ten years

"Given the benefits of hosting the beauty pageant in Dominican Republic, the Government expressed its willingness to help in any way", detailed the organizers of the contest.

Dominican Republic hosted the Miss Universe once, in 1977, when Janelle Penny of Trinidad and Tobago won the title.
