The girls are finally getting out of Dusit Thani Hotel to jumpstart their pre-pageant activities. A group of pre-selected girls went to the snail farm yesterday morning. Today, another group of lucky ladies will do some “Muay Thai” activities in a boxing camp. Later this afternoon, all 90+ girls will be touring the vicinity of Wat Arun Temple in the city center. A special dinner event is also awaiting them tonight. Since the pre-pageant activities have finally begun, I thought it would be good to finally share my thoughts about the frontrunners for this year’s Miss Universe crown. In random order… PUERTO RICO – I just LOVE this girl right now. Ever since she arrived in Bangkok, I am totally hooked on her. Kiara is very beautiful. She also has a very sweet, amiable and charming personality which is a far cry from her other Latina counterparts. For now, the only setback I am seeing her is something which is not her own doing. Kiara reminds me a lot of the reigning winner’s facial beauty and I don’t know if it this will hurt her chances considering we haven’t seen a doppleganger of the outgoing winner being crowned next. SOUTH AFRICA – This girl was quite a headache last weekend. However, in terms of facial beauty, she is the only one I see who could hold a candle against Miss Philippines Catriona Gray, the woman to beat at the moment based on photos and in motion. What I just don’t like about her is that she seems to be all over the place right now which is hogging the limelight for the wrong reasons. You guys already know what I am talking about and I won’t talk about it anymore. Her recent (mis)demeanor reminds me a lot of Colombia’s Ariadna Guttierez back in 2015. Both are social butterflies as they are always making their presences felt. I do get where both are coming from as to why they are doing this. They have the biggest task out of all the girls competing as both need to stage a back-to-back win for their respective countries. That is such a tall order which justifies Tamaryn Green’s strategy right now: Do everything to win the crown. PHILIPPINES – Speaking of Catriona Gray, she is still the woman to beat at the moment. Her arrival in Thailand already feels like a homecoming judging from the warm reception she got from the local fans and number of bodyguards surrounding her afterwards. Even if she ‘dresses down’ in jeans for an activity, she still remains a hot copy. I know some fans might be complaining why she hasn’t been pulled out for sponsor shoots lately but these guys have to remind themselves that she has already achieved so much what the other ladies combined in the shoot haven’t done yet. The Sherri Hill gig still plays out vividly in my mind at the moment and if you compare that milestone to the yearly CHI/Yamamay photoshoots, everything still really pales in comparison. I reckon MUO is just trying to spread the wealth if you think about it. More ‘other girls’ being pulled out, more fans will be happy. USA – Sarah Rose Summers is such a natural joy in interviews. She has this uncanning ability to magnet you with her charm and personality in whatever she does. If I were a delegate, I would just love to be with her in a heartbeat. She is just that girl whom you would love to have a fun chat with after all the stress and craziness at the end of the day. I can clearly see now why MUO picked her. VENEZUELA – To be honest, I haven’t been liking her OOTDs since she arrived in Bangkok. Girl still continues to suffer from poor styling choices up to this day. But Sthefany Gutierrez is giving me this sort of that “I-don’t’-care-what-you-think-about-my-looks-everyday’ look because I think she is reserving her best cards for the crucial events which truly matter: prelims and finals. COLOMBIA – The way I feel for Venezuela is also the the way I feel for this girl. Valeria has also been playing low key since arriving which is a far cry from all her predecessors’ strategy for the past few years. Her predecessors screamed “WOW” factor with their beauty and loud personalities when they all arrived in their respective pageants but Valeria is doing the opposite. I think she likes that we are underestimating her chances now and she will just spring a huge surprise when she pulls the rug from under the favorites in the end. This is what I am getting from her now. AUSTRALIA – Apart from Puerto Rico, this girl is really growing on my list. The Thais love her at the moment. It’s probably her candor and authenticity that are rubbing the Thai fans in a good way. She is very simple and down-to-earth. She isn’t also afraid to get real and share her past experiences on social media. Everyone loves someone who is true to herself. She is really Top 5 material for me at the moment. VIETNAM – In all fairness with Hhennie, she is really bringing it to the table as well. Her daily OOTDs are worth waiting for as she knows how to highlight her assets: her pixie-hair cut and mile-long legs. I just love how she is being styled in the pageant as I am really digging all her looks so far. Now let’s see in the coming days whether she has also improved her communication skills. I don’t want her ending up like what happened to her compatriot 3 years ago. THAILAND – Everyone loves a good and gracious host delegate and Ning Sophida is doing it perfectly so far. She always looks cheerful and very approachable in pre-pageant activities. I just love her humility. I don’t know why the Thais haven’t given their full support to this girl as she, I feel, has what it takes to do well in the competition. MEXICO – Is it me or what? But ever since Ximena Navarette got crowned as Mexico’s 2nd Miss U, everything went downhill from there. And I think Andrea Toscano is raring to erase that perception I have at the moment. My moles on the ground tell me she looks very striking in person almost comparing her beauty to those ravishing telenovela stars her country has exported. However, she needs to be more tactful with her statements in her social media accounts. Right now, she is in hot water with the local fans over her “greasy Thai food” comment on her IG live last night. Latinas are known to speak their minds and I hope they take it easy. Andrea Tovar from Colombia made a similar gaffe in Manila two years ago but it didn’t stop her from reaching Top 3 in the finals. If I will be given a chance to advise her, I want to tell her to be more careful with her words in social media. She needs to remind herself that being tactful and diplomatic are also essentials on what it takes to be Miss Universe nowadays. So far ,these 10 girls are the ones dominating social media right now. Let’s see if they all live up to our expectations in the next coming days.
