It’s the art of the deal.

Donald Trump, who wrote this morning on Twitter that he acquired NBCUniversal’s stake in the Miss Universe organization, becoming the sole owner, is in talks to sell the entire company to Ari Emanuel and Patrick Whitesell’s WME/IMG, people with knowledge of the matter said.

IMG, acquired by William Morris Endeavor Entertainment LLC and Silver Lake Management in 2014, is interested in owning all of the Miss Universe organization rather than just a stake, said one of the people, who asked not to be identified because the information is private. Trump wrote “stay tuned” on Twitter after announcing he’d acquired NBCUniversal’s roughly half ownership stake.

“At the end of the day, Miss Universe is a media property,” said Kyell Thomas, head of entertainment at Octagon, a sports and entertainment marketing company. “There aren’t too many properties that come up that have name recognition and global scale.”

In April, WME/IMG bought the Professional Bull Riders from Spire Capital Partners for about $120 million, expanding its footprint in live events.

“Now you have a major talent agency acquiring a media property rather than representing it,” Thomas said. “To me, that’s a further test of the model they’re trying to create.”

Valuing the property could be difficult because nothing like this has been on the market in a long time, he said.

Pageant Lawsuits

Trump also tweeted Friday he had “settled all lawsuits” against NBC involving Miss Universe. With the purchase of NBCUniversal’s stake, Trump officially ended a partnership that already had dissolved after he derided some Mexican immigrants as “rapists” during a speech announcing his campaign as a Republican presidential candidate.

Alan Garten, Trump’s lawyer, alluded to potential legal action against NBC in June after the broadcast network owned by NBCUniversal decided not to air this year’s Miss USA pageant. NBC, which has also aired Trump’s “The Apprentice” series for more than a decade, said June 29 it would end its business relationship with Trump.

Maura McGreevy, a spokeswoman for WME/IMG, declined to comment, as did a representative for Silver Lake. Stuart Levine, a spokesman for NBCUniversal, a unit of Comcast Corp., declined to comment. A spokeswoman for NBCUniversal previously confirmed the transaction with Trump and declined to say more. Garten, Trump’s lawyer, didn’t respond to a request for comment.

The New York Post reported WME/IMG was bidding on Trump’s 49 percent stake last month. The newspaper noted WME/IMG already has a licensing agreement with Miss Universe.

Emanuel and Whitesell are co-chief executive officers of WME/IMG.
