Ratings: NBC’s Miss Universe Pageant Tops Sunday in Demos

A shift to Sunday helped NBC’s annual “Miss Universe Pageant” produced big ratings gains this year, as the event stood as the night’s top broadcast in key demos with some of its best numbers in years. Also of note on the final Sunday of the month were modest exits for ABC’s “Galavant” and “Resurrection.”

According to preliminary national estimates from Nielsen, NBC won Sunday among the broadcasters thanks to the live, three-hour “Miss Universe Pageant” from Miami (2.0/6 in 18-49, 7.6 million viewers overall), which was the night’s No. 1 entertainment program in 18-49 as well as both persons 12-34 (1.5/6) and adults 25-54 (2.3/6).  It grew with each half-hour, peaking with a 2.4 demo rating and 8.8 million total viewers from 10:30 to 11.

The telecast, which saw Miss Colombia come away the winner, hit a six-year high in adults 18-49 and a nine-year high in total viewers. Last year’s event got buried by college football when it was held on a Saturday in November (0.9 in 18-49, 3.8 million viewers overall).

The Spanish-language telecast of “Miss Universe” on Telemundo delivered record highs (0.9 rating in 18-49, 2.27 million viewers overall), nearly doubling the event’s 2013 totals.
