She’s bright, she’s beautiful, she’s talented, and of course, the cameras love her, after all, Miss Puerto Rico was the one picked by the photographers covering the event as “Miss Photogenic”.

“I can’t believe, am I photogenic?”, she said when announced as the prize winner. The answer: Oh yes, you are.

Talking to Puerto Rico’s Desiree Del Rio you soon realize that she’s not only a beautiful woman, but also an intelligent and determined one. Hailing from Bayamont, the 26 year-old model and beauty queen believes beauty pageants are without a doubt taken very seriously in her country.

“It all started in 1970, when Puerto Rico won its first Miss Universe title. Ever since the press in Puerto Rico takes it very seriously, every detail counts”, she explained. “Competing in local pageants is like going to war, people really have no idea unless they’ve been there”.

Because of the exposure pageants get in Puerto Rico, Desiree believes many girls take part in the national contests to get a chance in the entertainment business: “Beauty contests in Puerto Rico have revealed a considerable number of singers, models, actresses, television presenters. The exposure is there, there is no doubt”.

Desiree is a Law student who’s currently working at the Representatives Chamber of Puerto Rico. Would she prefer to see her island as an American state or independent one day? “No. I like things the way they are. I would like to see Puerto Rico always as it is today. We have freedom, we feel like a nation, yet we are American citizens, even though we cannot vote for president. I wouldn’t change the current status quo”.

For those who do not remember it, Miss Puerto Rico participated in Miss International two years ago. She was the 3rd runner-up in the pageant held in China. When comparing it with Miss Supranational, she tells GB:

“I guess in Miss International we had to be very formal at all times. Here I found a more relaxed atmosphere, we can wear flat shoes to go out in nature, for example, which is fantastic. I believe Miss Supranational allows us to be who we are, and I love it. The girls in general really enjoy that”. As for the pageant production, she added: “Here it will be much more high-tech. Be prepared, the show will be amazing”.

The Puerto Rican stunner also said that she’s surprised to see how big Miss Supranational became in just a few years: “I was sent here after being a runner-up in Miss Universe Puerto Rico, which means it’s already considered something big. I am sure it will just keep on growing, organizers here deserve respect and admiration”.

About Belarus, Del Rio confessed she was surprised: “The country is so clean, the people are kind, the food is healthy. Well, let me tell you, I ate much better here than I did in China, really, there it was so difficult!”.

And as an experienced beauty queen, which tips she leaves to girls who want to compete in beauty pageants? “Three things to remember at all times: be genuine, be natural, be disciplined”. And should a beauty delegate get into cosmetic surgery? “If it will make her feel better, certainly yes. Some people claim that after such surgeries women are no longer ‘natural beauties’. I beg to disagree. A woman can only act naturally, when she’s 100% confident with who she is, and if it takes a surgery, then be it. I am totally in favor of it”.
