Karol Lopez was born in a very small town called Pacho, in Colombia. She moved to London, Ontario when she was 14 years old and has since considered Canada her true home. She came to Canada as a refugee fleeing the war in her native country. She flew from Colombia to Miami to New York to Buffalo by herself and stayed at a homeless shelter for a few days before being able to cross the border into Canada where she was welcomed as one of its children. Karol is thankful to have her family here with her now and considers herself to be blessed to be able to call Canada her home. As a refugee she believes that immigration and multiculturalism represent what the Canadian essence is all about, and because of this, she feels like she embodies and exemplifies that essence.

Karol graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University in 2015 in journalism and contemporary studies. She also obtained a post-graduate certificate from Conestoga College in Broadcast journalism and documentary Production. And finally, she graduated from Fanshawe College as an office administrator and is currently learning French as her third language after Spanish and English. Karol is passionate about education and she believes that the knowledge you gain is the only thing that cannot be taken away from you.

Karol is described as perseverant, brave, and courageous and these are the traits that she wants Canada and the world to see when she has the opportunity to represent Canada internationally. She has learned that in order to be happy and successful all she needs to do is follow her dreams. A reminder of this lesson is her favourite quote by the author Paulo Coelho: “Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams…”

Karol has graced the runway for many national and international designers and has walked at Toronto Fashion Week, International Fashion Encounter, Latin American Fashion Week in Canada, Fashion Art Toronto just to name a few. Through her modeling work, Karol has volunteered with many special causes and charities such as SickKids, Children without Borders, Youth Day, Fashion against Poverty, Easter Seals Charity, and many more.

Katherine Highgate

Katherine is a woman who prides herself on setting goals and achieving them. She is a graduate of the Radio and Television Arts program at Ryerson University and strives to make a name for herself in television. While she was at Ryerson, she developed a passion for all things media related, and is dedicated to learning as much as she can about television production. Katherine is also passionate about creating more spaces for women in this industry, and through pageantry, has had the opportunity to mentor and encourage other young women to seek out leadership opportunities for themselves.

Born and raised in Dresden, Ontario, Katherine is a small town girl at heart. Growing up, she starred in dance recitals and plays, and began competing in pageants to gain confidence. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, tap dance, theatre, creative writing, cooking, travel, and spending time with family and friends.

Katherine is passionate about education and was fortunate enough to compete in the international Odyssey of the Mind creative problem solving competition. Katherine had the opportunity to serve as a trustee with the Lambton Kent District School Board for a yearlong term, and is a proponent for education and providing youth with the resources and knowledge that they need to succeed and become future leaders. She is also a recipient of the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Community service as well as the Helen Kavanaugh Nicol Scholarship.

Katherine is not new to the pageant stage, and has had the privilege of representing her hometown in the Miss Teen Canada-World pageant and Miss Earth Canada pageant, finishing as the first runner-up. She has also been featured in FLARE, Jet Magazine, and the Toronto Sun.

Katherine is dedicated to working with youth to help develop their self-esteem, and hopes to reach more young people through her platform; “Confidence is Queen”. She is a strong believer that anything is possible through hard work and is excited and honoured to grace the Miss Universe Canada stage.

Kaydee Guillaume

Kaydee Elizabeth Guillaume (of Jamaican and Haitian decent) was born in Toronto, Ontario, but raised in Brampton for the majority of her life. Growing up in a strong cultured-loving home, Kaydee was always encouraged to believe in her dreams. Her ability to adapt to her environment and practice self-patience has allowed her to become the multi-creative person she is today. As a child through to her late teens, Kaydee was the type to bring home countless school awards and recognitions despite any obstacles she faced along the way.

Her father — a business owner, influenced her to use her talent to its potential. One of her earliest memories as a child was going to work for the summers with her father and siblings, where she quickly learned the ins and outs of construction/ renovation and waterproofing. Kaydee’s passion of arts and construction, lead her to graduate as a Civil Engineer.

Kaydee is considered to be a hoarder of knowledge. No matter what the topic or activity is, she is always up for a challenge to learn regardless of the topic. Currently a working Civil Engineer Quantity Surveyor, juggling her life as an actress, model and a custom tattoo design artist, Kaydee learns how to balance her personal life and other important life responsibilities with a positive mindset and great organization skills.

As a Miss Universe Canada National delegate, Kaydee is grateful for the chance to hopefully become an ambassador representing a great country like Canada. She feels lucky to live in such a diverse country of people of all nationalities.

Kaydee will continue to spend her time volunteering, and spreading awareness for different causes. She will also continue to mentor millennials on the importance of adapting to future technological and global changes, and coaching the youth on STEM related careers. For Kaydee, the most rewarding thing about helping others is the positivity and hope you give them.

Keyla Letanno

Keyla is a 23 year old woman who is fluent in English, Spanish and Italian. She is originally from Venezuela where she was raised by her Venezuelan mother and has a Canadian father. At the age of 20, in light of the difficult political and economic climate of her home country, Keyla made a bold decision to move to Canada in search of a better life.

Although she had to leave her family and friends behind, she is grateful that Canada has opened its doors for her, and shown her its beauty and possibilities.

Keyla is a very happy, positive and outgoing young woman who enjoys helping others.
She believes humility is the best and most important quality a person can have, because anyone can need a helping hand at any time in life. In Venezuela, Keyla enjoyed singing, acting and modeling; she also taught younger girls how to runway model.

She has recently opened her own business as an aesthetician in Richmond Hill, Ontario. She believes her work is her best opportunity to demonstrate her passion for helping others feel good about themselves.

Every day, Keyla demonstrates that hard work, discipline and a good attitude can help anyone achieve their goals.

Keyla values courage most of all, and is open to being vulnerable and taking risks. For her, this is the best way a person can open doors for life’s wonderful surprises. She is excited to participate in Miss Universe Canada, mostly because it will allow her to encourage other young men and women to embrace courage and follow their dreams.

Laura Cavé

Laura Cavé is a Chartered Professional Accountant. She consults clients in diverse financial markets across Canada and internationally. She has worked in the provinces of New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario, the Territory of Nunavut, and the Republic of Haiti.

While in university, she won second place at JDC (Jeux Du Commerce), the nationally recognized commerce games in Canada. Laura completed her degree in Business Administration at the Université du Québec. She paid her way through school without contracting any student loans. She first worked as a teller for a bank and then as a finance officer for the federal government. Today she currently works as a senior consultant for KPMG, an internationally recognized accounting firm.

Laura is a supporter of youth empowerment. She believes that the children are the future and should have access to the tools to develop the skills to become the leaders of tomorrow. You can find her leading projects or in trainings honing her own leadership skills. As Miss Universe Canada, she would use the platform to be a voice for the cause by sharing her own experience in becoming a successful young professional.

Linnea Kiefer

Linnea Kiefer is a very bubbly, gracious and passionate young lady. She confidently believes that no matter what is going on in your life, the right outlook and attitude will make anything possible. She enjoys being active and is currently learning kickboxing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

She was born in in the historic town of Brockville, Ontario and has always been very independent, living on her own since the age of 16. She moved to Toronto at 18 to pursue her studies. She enjoyed her Business Marketing program because it allowed her to interact with people, applying her studies and the ability to be creative. She is currently studying and enjoying her courses in Aesthetics.

Linnea has always been very curious about life and the rest of the world. Her interests continue to grow as she travels and learns about other people, culture, history and art. She can often be found walking through large metropolitan cities in order to get the real feel of life and the people who live there. Her short time in Paris, France exposed her to the increasing problem of homeless immigrant families living on street corners, looking for a better life than their homeland, but unable to find one. She believes that increasing social inclusion and intercultural dialogue will help economic growth and development.

She is a passionate animal lover and advocate for animal welfare. She is also a big supporter of animals at risk and has helped many causes in North America, as well as Asia and Europe. Linnea has supported a variety of initiatives from Canadian Wildlife to trapped Moon Bears in Asia and Walk in Her Shoes supporting young women from all walks of life.

Linnea will use her pageant success to bring more attention and support to animals at risk not just in Canada, but around the world. She will be a louder more visible voice in the ongoing struggle to protect animals that need that protection and help.

Linnea’s role model has been her father since she was reunited with him at age 18. He has given her stability of family, a sense of purpose and the importance of being ethically correct. Her father taught her the importance of hard work and sacrifice by both his words and actions, touching her life in a remarkable way. “He has ingrained important values of hard work, humility, and respect for others in me. I’m very blessed to have a father like him.”

Linnea believes you should surround yourself with people who support you and are positive, but if you do not have that support know it’s okay to be alone. She is also a firm believer in surrounding yourself with the dreamers as well as the doers, the believers and thinkers, but most of all, surround yourself with those who see the greatness within you, even when you don’t see it yourself.

Mackenzie Dove

Current Miss Newfoundland and Labrador, Mackenzie Dove, is very much looking forward to the chance to represent her home province on the national stage at Miss Universe Canada.

After being empowered through the Girls of Science, Engineering, Trades, and Technology Program (GOSETT) herself as a child, Mackenzie has become very passionate about providing this same early exposure to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) careers to young women. She feels the knowledge and experiences gained through her involvement in the program have lead her to great achievements and helped shape her career vision. One such achievement was her becoming the Pilot of the Clarenville High Robotics Team, which won the Ranger Class of the International Mate Underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Competition in 2014. A member-turned-mentor of GOSETT and a presenter with Memorial University’s Let’s Talk Science group, Mackenzie volunteers presenting to children of all ages on a variety of STEM topics.

In 2010, Mackenzie lost her grandmother and role model, Verley Matthews, to Multiple Myeloma – a cancer affecting the white blood cells. Inspired by her grandmother’s legacy, as well as her early exposure and natural inclination for STEM subjects, Mackenzie chose to dedicate her life to working and volunteering within the Oncology field. She spends much of her free time volunteering with the Canadian Cancer Society in their “Living Room” providing and assisting cancer patients and survivors with wigs, turbans, scarves, and breast prosthesis free of charge. In addition to that, she became the Co-Chair of Memorial University’s Relay for Life which raised over $100,000 throughout her time involved. Driven by the memory of her strong and generous grandmother as well as the strength of the people she met through the Canadian Cancer Society, Mackenzie is working to become a Clinical Oncology Pharmacist in hopes that she can support and strengthen the community as much as it has her.

Marta Stepien

Occupation: Student at St. Clair College (Biomedical Engineering Technology), & Applied Researcher

Marta was born in Warsaw, Poland and was raised in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. She is entering her last year of her biomedical engineering technology studies, and is working as an applied researcher, and model. Marta is extremely passionate about her field of studies, and hopes to inspire young women to not shy away from STEM fields, but rather to shatter glass ceilings and break barriers.

Education has been a lifelong focal point of Marta’s life. A passion for technology and an admiration for modern medicine inspired her to pursue a career in both fields. Currently, she holds are 3.96 GPA and is going to be completing her final year of biomedical engineering technology studies at St. Clair College. She is also completing a certificate through the HMX Fundamentals program at Harvard Medical School in genetics and immunology in her spare time. Her love for education and STEM has given her opportunities to work as a researcher, and improve the lives of others by doing what she loves. This love, along with along with her passion for giving back to the community, led her to becoming an ambassador for Le Petit Écolière – a Toronto based company that works with Plan Canada and Plan International in order to provide young girls the means to an education.

Modeling has been a huge part of Marta’s life, beginning her career in the industry at the age of 14. After being scouted, she signed with a mother agency in Toronto. By the time she was 15, she was signed in Paris and Seoul, and was actively working at her career and traveling often – all while balancing it with completing her high school education. Currently, she is signed in Toronto, Canada; London, England; Miami, USA; and Zurich, Switzerland. She has worked with brands such as Charlotte Tilbury, Lululemon, Schwartzkopf, Beach Bunny, Naeem Khan, and Selfridges, shot campaigns for David Shoe Stores, Hello Kitty, and Calla Blanche Bridal, and appeared in dozens of publications. It’s given her the opportunity to see the world at a young age, which helped shape the strong independent woman she has grown into today.

Travelling the world through both modeling and pageantry allowed Marta to better understand the world and people around her. It also opened her eyes to the issues in the world, and made her determined to become part of the solution to said problems. She currently focuses her efforts to end stereotypes, and inspire young women to follow their ambitions, through her volunteering and guest speaking opportunities.

Megha Sandhu

Occupation: Actor, Model, Graduate in Behavioural Neuroscience (BSc)

Megha Sandhu recently graduated from her program in Behavioural Neuroscience and works as a part time model, actress and entrepreneur. Growing up in Montreal with a special needs brother she learnt early on to accept that everyone has a combination of both strengths and weaknesses and that compassion and patience go a long way in speaking across our differences. Additionally, she aims to highlight the importance of being a strong woman and wishes to bring to light the notion that ambition and femininity can go hand in hand.

She therefore took it upon herself to begin volunteering in public schools with special needs children and was determined to make a difference on a greater scale. Megha entered Miss Teen Quebec in 2012 and went on to win Miss Teen Canada that same year. Empowered, she spoke in front of 20,000 youth at We Day Vancouver. One of her accomplishments took place that same year when she travelled to Kenya, Africa with Free the Children to help build a primary school. She realized then that pageants are a platform to not only achieve your own personal dreams but are a gateway to genuinely help and inspire others in need.

Megha is the Co-President & Co-Chair of the Montreal based VIVO Fund. The VIVO Fund organizes an annual charity fundraiser towards the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the Jewish General Hospital to help fund and facilitate acute care and follow-up of premature newborns.

Megha was trained at Straeon Acting Studios where she was coached in acting for film/television, camera and scene studies and is a member of ACTRA Montreal. Her recent work includes; a stint at 24 Hour Plays where she co-wrote and conducted short comedy skits for local audiences and featured in a commercial for VICHY Cosmetics. Megha also has a natural flair for accents and enjoys putting on comedy skits in her free time.

Megha is also a well-being and fitness advocate and enjoys surfing, hiking and especially boxing for its confidence enhancing abilities in potentially dangerous situations. She tries to lead a healthy and compassionate life where she adopts a plant based diet and lifestyle. She can take calculated risks and gets her adrenaline kick from adventure sports like paragliding and cliff diving.

Megha’s education, acting, modeling, volunteering, drive and humanity supplement her previous pageant experiences including; Miss Teen Canada and Top 10 at Miss Teen World. Becoming Miss Universe Canada has been a lifelong dream of Megha’s and one that she would be honoured to accomplish so she can make her country proud on the Miss Universe Stage.

Nicolette Santilli

Nicolette Santilli is a hardworking, ambitious, and goal driven 23-year-old from Windsor, Ontario. Coming from a family of Italian immigrants, Nicolette is grateful for all the opportunities that Canada has provided her and her family. She is not shy to indulge in her Italian heritage, but considers herself a proud citizen of Canada, a country that has embraced and celebrated her diversity.

Nicolette is a firm believer that an education is one of the most valuable achievements in life. Nicolette obtained her Bachelor of Health Science degree and is pursuing a career as a pharmacist. She is currently in her third year of the Doctor of Pharmacy program at Wayne State University and was elected by the school to serve as the class vice-president. With a nearly perfect GPA, Nicolette was invited to join the Rho Chi Honour Society for ranking amongst the top 15 students in the entire program. She is passionate about her profession and plans to open her own pharmacy to serve her patients in the Windsor region.

Nicolette extends her passion for healthcare beyond the classroom and currently works with St. Frances Cabrini, a non-profit clinic where she provides free medications and health services for the homeless and underserved. Through this, Nicolette has realized how so many people lack quality healthcare. Nicolette hopes to use her pageant involvement to continue advancing her platform of serving both local and international underserved communities through healthcare.

In her spare time, Nicolette enjoys all things fitness. She has run 3 half marathons and hopes to run her fourth this October. She has been practicing yoga for 3 years and considers herself a “yogi-in-the-making.” Her active lifestyle has led to several modeling opportunities.

Nicolette had the honour of being crowned Miss Via Italia in 2016 and placing in the top 5 of the Miss Universe Canada Western Ontario Preliminaries. With a well-rounded background and confident stage presence, Nicolette hopes to serve as an inspiration to young girls everywhere that no matter your upbringing, with hard work and dedication, you can achieve anything.

Nika Gantar

Nika Gantar was born and raised in Bedford, Nova Scotia, but spent many of her summers travelling through Europe, including regular visits to the picturesque country of Slovenia where her dad was born. She graduated from the Halifax Grammar School with high honors and received her IB Diploma in 2016. Currently, she is studying at the Berklee College of Music in Boston on an $80,000 scholarship, pursuing a degree in music. She participated in the Kiwanis music festival for several years, placing in every category, and winning first place on five occasions. She has received several awards, including the Chico Berardi award, and the Castillia Performance Arts Award. In high school, she established a charity called “Malala’s Dream”, and raised thousands of dollars for the education of women in third world countries. For her humanitarian efforts, she received the Halifax Community Service Award, as well as the Lieutenant Governor’s Medal. She has played the lead in several musicals and plays, including Charity in Sweet Charity, and Patrice in 13. Her parents instilled a love of reading in her from a young age, and she continues to be an avid reader as well as an aspiring poet and songwriter. Nika speaks four languages, plays the piano, and took dance lessons for over ten years. She is convinced that performing is the greatest gift in the world, because it allows her to surpass what is conceivable and decide what can be (and she doesn’t mind the applause!).

Nimmi Augustine

Nimmi Augustine was raised as a first generation Canadian. Despite the challenges of balancing two cultures, she grew to embody both the Canadian society she lived in and embrace the Indian heritage her parents strived to instil in her. She was fortunate to grow up in the multicultural haven of Toronto. Her love for diversity fostered a sense of compassion, equality and discovery that is manifested in a love for global food, art and travel.

At 17 years old she enrolled to become a Naval Officer in the Canadian Armed forces. She attended the Royal Military College of Canada where she graduated First-Class in Electrical Engineering, all while achieving exceptional physical fitness standards, bilingualism, and holding leadership roles during the academic year. On completion of her degree she moved to Victoria, British Columbia to continue her training as a Marine Systems Engineer where her training has afforded her opportunities very few 23 year olds can speak of.

Aside from the high demands of the military, Nimmi practices her own sense of a balanced lifestyle. Being an ambitious health and fitness advocate, she decided to challenge herself to a different degree. She began to compete in fitness competitions in the Bikini Class. She has competed in Competitions in the USA and in Canada Placing in all three. The sport encompassed a great deal of discipline and determination. Team sports have always been a part of her life, starting with soccer at age 4 for 8 years including a period where she played competitive and then transitioning to rugby where she played in high school and in university.

Nimmi’s passions also extend to the arts as she joined dance at a young age and grew an interest for Hip Hop where she has danced competitively and has been part of a company. Upon moving to Victoria she grew an affinity to Brazilian Partner Dancing, Zouk. Her passion for mentoring led her to volunteer at Big Brothers Big Sisters as a Go Girls Facilitator, to promote healthy minds and healthy living to girls between the ages of 8-12 years old.

She is also has a dedication to international affairs and development as she is a member of the Canadian International Council where she takes part in discussions to address pressing problems in the world today.

Nova Stevens

Dynamic, resilient, persistent, and full of life; this is how those who know her best would describe Nova. However, asked to describe herself, Nova would emphasize resiliency and the power of faith in being able to change your circumstances. After her family fled a brutal civil war in South Sudan, Nova was sent alone to Canada at age 6 to be able to have a better life.

Leaving behind her mother in a UN camp in South Sudan and her father and siblings in Ethiopia, Nova uses her new chance at life in Canada as a driving factor in her mission to provide mentorship and support to children and youth in need.

By the young age of 15, with the help of the Youth Transition program in Alberta, she had already forged a life for herself: living independently, finishing school and learning the importance of guidance for youth. At age 18 she earned the manager position for the program because of her maturity and her drive to give back. Being separated from her family and growing up without her parents in Canada, Nova is acutely aware of the importance of fostering healthy development of children and youth from all walks of life. While continuing to work towards reuniting her family, she is continuously looking for opportunities to serve young Canadians as she is so grateful for the opportunities that being Canadian has given her. She is a youth mentor with the YWCA and a spokesperson for the Keep6ix program to help underprivileged youth who have been wrongly convicted to go on to live a constructive life.

Growing up, Nova shined as a natural leader. Having been involved with youth leadership programs throughout high school, she championed the importance of education for youth and helped their families foster that environment. She has always believed in the importance of a balanced and healthy lifestyle to promote both mental and physical wellness. As such she has always excelled in sport, competing competitively in volleyball, track and field, and basketball. This led to a full basketball scholarship out of high school. She continues to maintain an active lifestyle and practices mindfulness to remain focused on her goals – which, as you can imagine, are as big as her personality!

Paris Musaphir

Paris is pursuing an honors degree in the field of Biological Sciences with a focus on Genetics. Currently finishing her second year, she has an interest in becoming a Physician, which had initially sparked because of her older brother who was born with a rare genetic syndrome called Cornelia De Lange. Paris is an avid learner, who is consistently interested in discovering what has yet to be discovered. She also volunteers at a local hospital where she enjoys spending time to help care for the elderly patients by providing comfort and a listening ear.

Paris has worked tremendously hard over the past fifteen years to attain and maintain a second-degree, martial arts black belt in Tae Kwon Do. As a result of her hard work and abilities she was invited to join a high-performance team representing Manitoba, and to travel to different countries and compete at an International level. Through martial arts she has learned the value of discipline and many other important qualities such as respect for others and herself, commitment, and confidence. The values she has inherited from this commitment has attributed to success in all aspects of her life. Paris was elected head of the student body in her senior high school year where she was able to voice her opinions, speak on behalf of the students for changes within the school and learn valuable leadership skills that are still with her today.

As a recipient of the Duke of Edinburgh award, Paris has a keen interest in exploring new places and gaining a better understanding of herself and the cultures around her. While on the wildness retreat, Paris gained an interest in exploring and appreciating the world and nature around her. Meeting new people, bonding over campfires and hiking, Paris has developed a desire to continue seeking new adventures. Paris is an avid “foodie” and in her spare time; she loves following Gordon Ramsay tutorials and cooking up new creations. Her specialty in the kitchen is cooking Svalka, a traditional Slovenian delicacy with her grandmother.

Paris hopes to be a role model for younger girls, as she advocates for them working towards jobs in the STEM field. She is passionate about being an activist in order to encourage confidence and independence. She is a proud Winnipegger and has grown up loving the brash winters and beautiful beaches and lakes in the summers. She is excited to share her journey throughout the Miss Universe Canada competition and is excited to represent Canada on the global stage.
