Lauren-Howe-MUC-2017-Titleholder-Officia

Lauren is a recent Industrial Engineering graduate who is working as a project manager, actress, model, sports host and entrepreneur. As a self-proclaimed “geek”, Lauren is passionate about using digital tools to develop creative and innovative solutions to problems facing both businesses and people in need. She aims to encourage young women to explore STEM-related fields and provide them with the technical knowledge they need for success and creating lasting change in their communities. Lauren is a health and fitness advocate who enjoys photography, filmmaking, hiking, scuba diving, snowboarding and surfing in her spare time.

While studying at the University of Toronto, she realized how creative ideas combined with science and technology have the power to shape the world we live in. For example, she traveled to high density, low-income neighbourhoods of Mumbai with an organization to help design and implement sanitation facilities that use waste recycling technologies to create grey water and biogas.

Having been a provincial field hockey athlete, sports and fitness have always been central to her life. While in her final two years of University, she worked as the In-Arena Host for the Toronto Maple Leafs. This involved her speaking to a live audience of 20,000 individuals at each home game, regularly interviewing athletes, alumni, special guests and some of the best fans in the NHL. She has also hosted for the IIHF World Juniors, the 2016 Toronto Pan Am Games, the 2016 Grey Cup and the 2017 Rogers Cup. After graduating, she worked in Sales Strategy at adidas Group Canada. Across all these experiences, she began to see the direct impact of how sport has the power to change lives. Lauren strives to continue this mission through her continued involvement in the industry.

Having traveled to all seven continents by the time she was 19 (including Antarctica!), Lauren has always had a natural inclination to learn about different cultures. She has volunteered with multiple not-for-profit organizations internationally, including Ghana, India, Peru and Nicaragua and has photographed the Norwegian Arctic under the mentorship of a National Geographic photographer. Using the reporting skills she has developed throughout her life, Lauren aspires to create short films that will help amplify the voices and stories of individuals whose voices are not heard as loudly as the rest of the world.

Lauren’s public speaking skills, education, humanitarian nature, ambition and determination compliments her pageant experience as Miss Teen Canada 2011, 4th Runner Up at Miss Teen World 2012 and 2st runner up at Miss Universe Canada 2014. Lauren is determined to make Canada proud on the Miss Universe Stage.

Her first job as a radio host was on a children’s show where she discussed current issues in a fun and educational manner with kids in her community. When she was 18, she began a new job with a Toronto radio station as a news and entertainment reporter. She began her new job as a television host and producer in the beginning of 2018.

Having been a competitive figure skater for most of her life, she has gained a strong athletic discipline that carries over to this day. She has dealt with international press and worked with marginalized communities and non-profits to raise funds, awareness and give them a voice.

This has turned into one of her greatest strengths because it has given her a sense of empathy. She is able to observe others and analyze what they say, do, and how they are influenced by their surroundings. She considers her empathy to be vital in her career and in Miss Universe because you can be a great doctor, an entrepreneur, an exceptional writer or the best engineer in the world, but if you cannot connect with someone, build their trust and truly understand them, then you will not have an impact on their lives.

Gloren GuelosGloren-Guelos-2018.jpg

eight: 5’5
Hometown: Surrey, British Columbia
Languages: English, Tagalog
Occupation: Nursing

Gloren is a “dancing nurse” who lives her life to the fullest taking on all opportunities that come her way with courage and confidence. Gloren chose a professional career in nursing and currently works at a dementia and complex care home facility. She is a dance teacher, a model and a novice entrepreneur. In addition to these professions, Gloren connects to her community through volunteering and charity work.

In 2008, Gloren immigrated to Canada and became a Canadian citizen. She had been raised in a small town in the Philippines. Transitioning into a different lifestyle was challenging, but nevertheless, it has since motivated Gloren to work hard in achieving her goals. Hospitality has always been one of Gloren’s strongest skills. From working as a server in restaurants and hotels, Gloren found herself engaged with people from different cultures. At the age of nineteen, Gloren graduated as a licensed practical nurse from Stenberg College. Being a nurse motivates her to be strong, and to face all avenues of life with positivity and compassion for others. Gloren discovered her love for dance when she moved to Canada, and eventually became a high school dance team coach. Currently, she teaches dance one on one to beginners and she believes that anyone can dance as long as they have the heart to enjoy it. Gloren became a member of the BC Lions “Felions” Dance Team in 2016. She travelled to the beautiful cities of Toronto and Ottawa where she performed at the Grey Cup Festival. Through nursing and dancing, Gloren established her desire to promote the value of health and fitness. She also stresses the importance of pursuing an education, being culturally aware, and to “pay it forward”.

Upon receiving the title of Miss British Columbia 2016, Gloren uses her platform to bring together her local community to create a positive impact. After gaining the privilege to become a proud Canadian woman, Gloren believes that the best way to give back is to pay it forward to those who are in less fortunate circumstances. The biggest highlight for Gloren has recently been hosting fundraising events. Her most proud moment was bringing the community together to raise money for meals, groceries, and school supplies for a small elementary school in a rural city in the Philippines. Through being involved in community work and attending local events as Miss British Columbia, she was able to defeat her fear of public speaking. As having once been a new immigrant, Gloren understands the feeling of fear. She encourages others to face their fears by living in faith, recognizing privileges, and using the abundance of opportunities life has to offer.

Gloren’s current project “#GlowInTheDark” is a global outreach that defies age, gender, ethnicity, for individuals to share their “glow in the dark” moment. She empowers and encourages individuals to step beyond their fears through social media. Gloren hopes to get more people involved in the movement. With Gloren’s humbling confidence, her determination to make her dreams come true, and her love for Canada, she believes that she is ready to represent the “True North”!
