Emma Field

First of all the introduction, Why don’t you tell us about yourself?

I’m 26 years old and live in Launceston, Tasmania. I grew up on the North West Coast of Tassie in a small town called Wynyard and attended an Agricultural school until Grade 10. We were always outdoors growing up going camping, surfing, motor bike riding and playing a lot of sport; I was always considered a bit of a tomboy! I moved to Hobart for University and now work in Launceston as a Lawyer for the Aboriginal Community Legal Service.

Emma Congratulations on making it so far in the such a coveted competition, we have to ask how the overall experience has been so far?

I have never done anything like this before, so the whole experience has been a completely new and surreal. I was extremely daunted at the beginning, but everyone has been so lovely and made me feel so comfortable through the process. I’m so thankful to be part of such a unique and incredible experience and to have met some of the most amazing girls from across Australia.

We have just heard you returned from the Intercontinental Resort in Bali as part of the program, How was the experience and what would you say was your highlight?

It was my first ever time to Bali, so I didn’t really know what to expect, but Intercontinental Resort definitely exceeded my expectations. The views, sunsets, pools, people, rooms and activities were all amazing. I think the highlight for me was the buffet though – I miss waking up to it every morning!!

It’s not long now until the finals, how are you feeling in the lead-up and what sort of preparation are you doing, before the finals get underway?

I’m feeling extremely nervous but excited at the same time leading up to the finals. To be honest, I’m not altering my usual routine too much for preparation, just continuing to keep up my fitness by eating healthy and exercising regularly when I can.

With so many women all bring their individual flare to the competition, what do you think will set you apart from the other contestants?

All the girls have so many amazing and different qualities but I think for me is a sense of determination and willpower that has gotten me to where I am today. I have always had high expectations of myself and will work as hard as I can until I get there.

Speaking of unique flare or style what would you say is your best style or beauty secret?

Unfortunately, I don’t have any beauty secrets to share, but I think my statement style go to is a good red lippy! My wardrobe is pretty much all black and white, so red lipstick always adds a touch of class and elegance.

What inspired you to enter in the Miss Universe Australia pageant?

I thought it would be a great platform to be able to express what I’m passionate about. I always like to try different things and thought it would be a great experience.

Speaking of inspiration who or what inspires you most?

My personal inspiration is Amal Clooney. I have always wanted to be a human rights lawyer and the work she does with the UN is incredible. Not only is she intelligent, but beautiful, gracious and humble too.

What is something people might find interesting about yourself?

Not many people know I was in the Tasmanian Institute of Sport as a cyclist.

What does the average day look like for you?

Mostly just work! And will try to fit in the gym when I can.

Where is your favourite place in the world to wind down and relax?

Can’t go past a relaxing bubble bath with a good book or Netflix series.

What is something you find yourself saying all the time?

‘I’m running late sorry.’

If you could give yourself one piece of advice five years ago what would it be?

I think just to have fun when you’re young! University life can sometimes be a bit full on but it’s nothing in comparison to when you’re out in practice with a full-time job.

And finally what are the five things you couldn’t live without?

My phone, my electric blanket (especially in a Tassie winter), red wine, my friends and Nutella!

Alecia McCallum

First of all the introduction, Why don’t you tell us about yourself?

I live in the beautiful Hunter Valley, and I am currently studying primary teaching at the University of Newcastle. One of my passions is dancing and performing on stage which I have been doing since the age of 4. One of my favourite things to do in my spare time is to read a book.

Alecia Congratulations on making it so far in the such a coveted competition, we have to ask how the overall experience has been so far?

The overall experience has been amazing. We have done so many things since being selected as a state finalist in January. Some of these include fittings, workshops, training sessions, national finalists’ trip to Bali and cooking a meal at the Ronald McDonald House for children and their families. I have enjoyed getting to know the national finalists from the other states and the experience has definitely been one I will never forget.

We have just heard you returned from the Intercontinental Resort in Bali as part of the program, How was the experience and what would you say was your highlight?

Bali was beautiful, and the whole program in Bali was amazing. Not only did we have a lot of fun but we also participated in workshops that were very helpful for not only the competition but also outside of the competition. My highlight of the Bali trip was visiting the Bali Life Foundation. The children in the orphanage were so beautiful and so talented, and they definitely put a big smile on my face.

It’s not long now until the finals, how are you feeling in the lead-up and what sort of preparation are you doing, before the finals get underway?

I am so excited for the finals in Melbourne, and I cannot wait for the runway show and the night of the final. My preparation so far has included going to the gym at least five days a week, using Bodi, watching the news and reading the newspaper, practising my walk and poses and finally getting to know myself and a deeper understanding of who I am.

With so many women all bring their individual flare to the competition, what do you think will set you apart from the other contestants?

What will set me apart from the other contestants is my walk and presence on stage. I have been performing on stage since I was 4 and that experience has allowed me to be confident and not get nervous on stage.

Speaking of unique flare or style what would you say is your best style or beauty secret?

I know this one is pretty obvious, but I do know a lot of people that don’t do this, my beauty secret is to always remove your makeup before you go to sleep. Even if you get home late or are too tired always take a couple of extra minutes to remove all makeup and cleanse your skin.

What inspired you to enter in the Miss Universe Australia pageant?

This is actually my 3rd year competing for Miss Universe Australia. I started competing in pageants at 16 to gain experience and knowledge that would help me to reach my ultimate goal to become Miss Universe Australia. Also, Tegan Martin (MUA 2014) inspires me to continue to enter because she is so beautiful, intelligent, kind and she never gave up, and I knew I wanted to be a part of a competition that promoted women like her.

Speaking of inspiration who or what inspires you most?

I’m studying to be a primary teacher and the people who inspire me the most are the amazing teachers I had at school. While completing my degree, I have always thought back to the teachers I had at school, and what made them a good teacher, this inspires me to be a good teacher.

What is something people might find interesting about yourself?

Something people find interesting about me, believe it or not, is that I compete in pageants and the Miss Universe Australia competition.

What does the average day look like for you?

My average day involves getting up in the morning and going to university. When I come home, I usually go to the gym, and then in the evening I spend time with my family or read a book (if I am not working).

Where is your favourite place in the world to wind down and relax?

My family has a holiday cabin at Bonny Hills which is right on the beach. I enjoy just laying on the beach and reading a book.

What is something you find yourself saying all the time?

I actually say this all the time to my sister, ‘stop wearing my clothes!’. But one thing I say to myself all the time is ‘as long as I have done my very best I am happy with whatever the outcome may be’.

If you could give yourself one piece of advice five years ago what would it be?

To always be confident in who you are and to always pursue your dreams no matter what.

And finally what are the five things you couldn’t live without?

My family and friends, my cat Nala, a book, my phone and a pair of heels.

Artia Ratahi

First of all the introduction, Why don’t you tell us about yourself?

My name is Artia Ratahi I am twenty years old, and I am a Northern Territory State Finalist in this year’s Miss Universe Australia competition. I grew up in Darwin and completed all of my schooling there. I also work as a casual retail assistant and model in my spare time.

Artia Congratulations on making it so far in the such a coveted competition, we have to ask how the overall experience has been so far?

My overall experience in the Miss Universe Australia competition so far has been amazing. Meeting the other contestants, organisers and previous Miss Universe winners was a highlight, especially the opportunity to participate in the winner’s trip to Bali. I feel very honoured and lucky to be a part of this competition.

We have just heard you returned from the Intercontinental Resort in Bali as part of the program, How was the experience and what would you say was your highlight?

It was definitely an unforgettable experience at the Intercontinental Resort in Bali. I was so nervous when I got there, but the other contestants and organisers were so friendly and inclusive and helped settle my nerves. My highlight of the trip was the workshops led by the previous Miss Universe Winners and Egami Style. The workshops included self-building with skills and speech, confidence, and walking techniques. It really helped me build my self-esteem and gave me the skills to grow as a young woman. I feel like I am so much better prepared for the competition now.

It’s not long now until the finals, how are you feeling in the lead-up and what sort of preparation are you doing, before the finals get underway?

I am very excited and feeling the nerves as the competition nears. I am physically preparing myself by monitoring what I eat every day and making sure I stay in shape. I’ve also been practising all the techniques I learnt at the workshop to mentally prepare for this. I’ve become a keen viewer of current affairs and news programs which I use to practise questions and answers scenarios.

With so many women all bring their individual flare to the competition, what do you think will set you apart from the other contestants?

Firstly, I think every contestant here is amazing, and I wish them the best of luck I think each of them are extraordinary. Having said that, I think what may set me apart is my laid back attitude and original style. I’m an NT girl through and through, and I think that will really show.

Speaking of unique flare or style what would you say is your best style or beauty secret?

My best style would be when I have my curly hair dressed with a bodycon dress and pretty nude heels. My best beauty secret is making sure I use makeup that compliments my skin tones.

What inspired you to enter in the Miss Universe Australia pageant?

I was inspired to enter the Miss Universe Australia pageant because I have not been involved with pageants before but have always been a keen follower and admirer. After seeing many beautiful and elegant contestants in previous Miss Universe competitions, I knew this was something I wanted to experience. They looked so happy and proud representing the person they are and where they are from either from their state or country. It inspired me to be just like them.

Speaking of inspiration who or what inspires you most?

Adriana Lima totally inspires me because she has this fierce and amazing presence, whether you see her on television, magazines or billboards. I look at her and dream of being just like her and where she reached with her years in modelling. Her way of modelling and keeping in shape motivates me. Her modelling career is the path I want to follow, whilst her strength and independence are characteristics I hope to replicate.

What is something people might find interesting about yourself?

I come from a very cultural background of Australian and New Zealand descent and have the only blue eyes in my family. I am currently pursuing a modelling career which I will be relocating to Melbourne for, after the pageant. I am a very creative person and love designing and arts. I have always wanted to design my own line of clothes. So I will be enrolling in a fashion design and technology degree in the new year.
Something else that I’ve just learnt about myself is I am totally a cat lover.  I have two cats that I adore and have set up their own Instagram page.  Yes, I know… that’s a little embarrassing!

What does the average day look like for you?

I really don’t have an average day as I work many different shifts and model in between them. Some days I am up really early going to modelling locations. I enjoy working out in the mornings and running by the beach side in the afternoons. My favourite days are when I get to sleep in a bit. If you ask my family, they’ll tell you I am a total night owl.

Where is your favourite place in the world to wind down and relax?

My favourite place to wind down and relax is the Darwin Waterfront which is an area close to the city. I love laying by the lagoon and either reading a book about the ancient world or listening to soul music.

What is something you find yourself saying all the time?

My daily mantra is “Don’t put off until later the things I can do now.”

If you could give yourself one piece of advice five years ago what would it be?

One piece of advice I would like to give myself five years ago is to never let my nerves, or being afraid, get the best of me; and to do the things that others are not willing to do and you will be successful.

And finally what are the five things you couldn’t live without?

First and foremost is my close friends and family. They are my rock and keep me grounded. The other things are music; it is my zen; my hair products to give my curls some control; and finally, my two cats because they are so cuddly and cute

Ashton Carbone

First of all the introduction, Why don’t you tell us about yourself?

Hi, my name is Ashton, I am 20 years old, and I live in Darwin, Northern Territory. I have various interests and hobbies; they include cooking, camping, fishing, horse riding and dancing. I own a very playful husky named Kyah, who I adore. I love to travel and experience different cultures, meeting new people and admiring breathtaking scenery. I have been very fortunate to have travelled to some very picturesque places; they include Hawaii, Alaska, Indonesia and many other beautiful parts of Australia. I am counting down the days until I am off on my next adventure, enjoying the sights of Europe.
If I could describe myself in one sentence, it would be that I am fun loving, caring, adventurous and ambitious.

Ashton Congratulations on making it so far in the such a coveted competition, we have to ask how the overall experience has been so far?

The experience has been so surreal, and I feel very grateful and honoured to be representing the Northern Territory on the big stage. I have grown so much as a person, and I have learnt a lot about myself on this journey. I have really enjoyed raising funds for the Toybox International Charity that assist sick and disadvantaged children. I think it is really humbling and a great opportunity to be involved with such a worthy charity.

We have just heard you returned from the Intercontinental Resort in Bali as part of the program, How was the experience and what would you say was your highlight?

The trip to Bali was unbelievable! We were all so well looked after and very spoilt in the process. It was great to finally meet all the other finalists and make some new friends. We dined at some amazing places, and we were treated to a very special traditional Indonesian farewell dinner and performance by the Intercontinental Bali Resort for our final night. The highlight for me was visiting the Bali Life Orphanage as it was an incredible eye opener. Watching the children dance, smile and enjoying themselves really does confirm that with a little love and care all children can live a better life.

It’s not long now until the finals, how are you feeling in the lead-up and what sort of preparation are you doing, before the finals get underway?

I am feeling nervous but also very excited. My preparation for the finals has changed slightly. I now begin my day with an early morning walk to prepare myself for the day ahead. I have mixed up my routine at the gym increasing my cardio sessions while still doing weight exercises. I am making better food choices, and I have spent more time reading and researching news sites to try and stay as informed as possible on local and world events.

With so many women all bring their individual flare to the competition, what do you think will set you apart from the other contestants?

I believe all of the finalists have their own individual flare which is what makes this experience so interesting. On a personal level, I am a humble, approachable person with a crazy sense of humour. I like to make people smile and feel good about themselves. I think it is important to always stay true to yourself and treat people with kindness, no matter what the situation.

Speaking of unique flare or style what would you say is your best style or beauty secret?

I love to accessorise! Whether it be a chunky necklace or glitzy earrings, accessorising can make a simple outfit go from drab to FAB in no time. I also think defined eyebrows are essential, they shape your face and can really make a difference in the way makeup appears on the face.

What inspired you to enter in the Miss Universe Australia pageant?

I entered the competition because I really wanted to challenge myself, I have never done anything like this before, and I’ve always had a passion for the beauty and fashion industry. What better opportunity to develop new skills, build self-confidence and develop new friendships with young women that have similar goals. I still cannot believe this is all happening. I feel so fortunate!

Speaking of inspiration who or what inspires you most?

Miranda Kerr inspires me the most; I think she is a perfect role model for young women as she promotes a happy and healthy lifestyle which I really admire. Also, the 1920’s and 1950’s fashion era really inspires me. The simple elegance, from the sculptured hairstyles featuring finger waves and soft curls to the unique dress style. In my opinion, women always looked stylish and immaculate.

What is something people might find interesting about yourself?

I had the opportunity to spend three weeks during an Alaskan winter chasing the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights). Fortunately, my persistence paid off, and I was able to witness this amazing natural phenomenon. The lack of sleep was totally worth it!

What does the average day look like for you?

My days tend to be hectic, but I prefer to be busy and run to a schedule. My office position takes up most of the day, and when I’m not at work, I’m staying active challenging myself at the gym and winding down with a relaxing walk with my husky Kyah.

Where is your favourite place in the world to wind down and relax?

I would have to say a visit to the beach. Australia has the most stunning beaches! There is always a nice quiet spot to relax and unwind. I love to feel the wind in my hair and the sand between my toes. There is no better way to soothe the soul.

What is something you find yourself saying all the time?

I tend to answer with “Oh my goodness, really?” when in a discussion with friends. Now when I think about it, it sounds rather dramatic.

If you could give yourself one piece of advice five years ago what would it be?

Always chase your dreams regardless of what others think or say. Hard work and persistence pays off. Just go for it! Life is too short.

And finally what are the five things you couldn’t live without?

1. My loved ones.
2. My husky, Kyah.
3. My mobile phone.
4. Sweet treats!
5. Anastasia Beverly Hills Eyebrow Pomade.
